What Are Hardware Profiles in KOS Studio?
When developing smart dispensing applications, the hardware specifications of your single-board computer play a crucial role in your project’s success. Unlike traditional web applications that run on powerful servers, embedded systems face real constraints: limited memory, restricted disk space, and specific screen resolutions.
KOS Studio’s hardware profile management system solves this challenge by allowing you to simulate these hardware limitations during development. This powerful feature eliminates the need for physical hardware testing, saving both time and resources.
Why Hardware Profiles Matter for Smart Dispensing
Single-board computers used in smart dispensing systems often operate with:
- Limited RAM
- Restricted storage
- Processing constraints that affect application performance
Hardware profiles help you design applications that work seamlessly within these real-world limitations.

Accessing Hardware Profiles in KOS Studio
- Login to KOS Studio.
- Select Tools from the top navigation bar.
- From the tools dropdown, select Hardware Profiles.
- The Hardware Profiles window opens in a separate tab. The interface displays available hardware profiles on the left sidebar, with detailed specifications shown in the main panel.
View hardware profiles
- Once you access the Hardware Profiles section, you’ll see:
- Profile List (left sidebar): All available hardware configurations
- Details Panel (main area): Specifications for the selected profile
- Action Buttons: Create, edit, and manage profile options
- Default Behavior
- If no hardware profiles exist, the system displays a helpful message prompting you to create one
- A default profile automatically appears in Image Configuration Screens when no custom profiles are defined
- This ensures your development process never gets blocked by missing configurations
Create a new profile
- Open Hardware Profiles (following the navigation steps above)
- Click on the Create new profile button.
- Fill in the profile details in the modal window:
- Name: Choose a descriptive name (e.g., “Raspberry Pi 4 – 4GB”)
- Description: Brief explanation of the hardware’s purpose
- Node Name: Must start with a letter, can include letters, numbers, and underscores
- Node Type: Classification for the device type (follows same naming rules)
- Primary Node: Set to “true” for single-node devices
- Disk Size: Available storage space (e.g., “32GB”, “64GB”)
- Memory Size: RAM allocation (e.g., “2GB”, “4GB”, “8GB”)
- Screen Resolution: Display dimensions if applicable (e.g., “1920×1080”, “800×480”)
- Lock Profile: Restrict modifications to prevent accidental changes
- Best Practices for Profile Creation
- Use clear, descriptive names that indicate the hardware model
- Include memory and storage specifications in the description
- Set realistic constraints based on your actual hardware
- Consider creating profiles for different deployment scenarios (development, testing, production)
Edit a profile
- Open Hardware Profiles (following the navigation steps above)
- Select the profile to edit from the list on the left-hand side.
- Profile details are now displayed for the profile you wish to edit. Click on the edit icon to edit the profile.
- This opens up the Edit Profile modal window, where you can edit the information for the profile.
- Click on Update to update changes to the profile. Consider following :
- To restrict the modification of a profile, you can mark the profile as locked. Once the profile is marked as locked, no changes can be made.
- To restrict the visibility of a profile, you can mark the profile as hidden.
FAQs
A Hardware Profile defines the hardware specifications of a device (such as CPU architecture, memory, disk size, and screen resolution) and allows KOS Studio to simulate hardware during development. This helps developers build and test applications without requiring the physical device, saving time and resources.
To create a new Hardware Profile in KOS Studio, follow these steps:
- On KOS Studio, select Tools from the top navigation bar and choose Hardware Profile Management. The left sidebar displays existing profiles, while the main panel shows specifications for the selected profile.
- Click Create new profile to add a new hardware profile.
- In the window, fill in the required details:
- Name: A descriptive name (e.g., “Raspberry Pi 4 – 4GB”)
- Description: Short summary of the hardware’s purpose
- Node Name: Name of the Node
- Node Type: Classification of the device type
- Primary Node: Set to true for single-node devices
- Board Type: Type of hardware board
- Architecture: CPU architecture (e.g., ARM, x86)
- Memory Size: Specify RAM (e.g., 2GB, 4GB, 8GB)
- Disk Size: Specify disk storage (e.g., 32GB, 64GB)
- Screen Resolution: Define display dimensions (e.g., 1920×1080, 800×480)
- Click Create to create the profile. The newly created profile will now appear in the left sidebar and can be edited later.
These hardware profiles can be used by images by selecting them within image settings.

A Hardware Profile defines the technical specifications of a target device, including its CPU architecture, memory capacity, disk size, screen resolution, and board type.
By mimicking physical hardware, these profiles allow developers to run and test device applications directly on a simulator. This eliminates the need to run code on the physical device during early development stages, significantly accelerating development and saving valuable hardware resources.

Device applications operate on embedded boards that have fixed and limited resources, unlike web applications that run on scalable server environments. As a result, the application must be optimized to operate within the constraints of the board’s CPU, memory, and available storage. Developing with a specific hardware profile ensures that the software is tested against the exact resource limitations and performance constraints it will face when deployed on the physical device in the real world.
